September
Beginning of the school year
On September 23, 2023, we began the first school year at our Polish School in Ravenscourt Park. It was a time of joy and enthusiasm as our students, teachers, and parents gathered to celebrate this important moment. The opening ceremony was full of positive energy, carrying the promise of new educational and developmental opportunities for our students.
October
Bilingual days
As part of the celebration of Bilingual Days, we encouraged students to share their favourite words in Polish and English. This event highlighted the importance of bilingualism in our community, showcasing the cultural and linguistic richness of our students.
National Education Day
In October, we also celebrated Teacher’s Day, expressing gratitude and appreciation for our teaching staff. It was an opportunity to appreciate the hard work and dedication of our teachers, who inspire and educate our students every day. This event made everyone aware of the significance of the teacher’s role in shaping young minds and hearts.
November
Operation ,,Candle”
We began November by participating in the “Candle” operation, which was an important moment of remembrance and reflection for all of us. Collective grave cleaning allowed us to nurture the memory of our ancestors and perpetuate traditions.
Fairy Tale Character Day
Our youngest students had the unique opportunity to celebrate Fairy Tale Character Day. On this day, our school transformed into a magical world full of colourful characters. We hosted Miss Poland UK and Ireland 2021, Sandra Salamon, and Miss Teen UK and Ireland 2023, Anna Raszewska, whose life stories became an inspiration for our children. This event emphasised the importance of dreams and striving for goals, inspiring the youngest to pursue their aspirations.
Tea for the elderly
The “Tea for the Elderly” initiative aimed to collect teas for the seniors of Kolbe House. It was an opportunity to show respect and gratitude to older generations while teaching our students the value of empathy and helping others.
Celebrating Polish Independence
On November 11, a day that is a symbol of freedom and independence for Poles, our students and teachers united to sing the national anthem. It was a moment full of emotion and patriotic pride, reminding us of Poland’s rich history. Participation in the “Independence to the Anthem” and “School to the Anthem” actions made our students aware of the importance of national identity and history, even when far from the country.
The Inauguration of new students
An important event in November was the inauguration of new students. This ceremony was not only a symbolic act but also a moment when our youngest students committed themselves to learning and development.
Theatre visit
A visit to the theatre to see “The Little Mermaid” was a unique opportunity to immerse in the world of art and culture. The children had the chance to experience the Polish language in a theatrical form, enriching their understanding of language and culture.
Teddy bear day
Teddy Bear Day was filled with warmth and charm. The youngest students brought their favourite teddy bears, celebrating together with teachers. This event reminded everyone of the importance of childhood and the simple joys that are part of upbringing.
Project ,,We sing history”
Older students participated in the “We Sing History” project, where music merged with the study of history, creating unforgettable educational experiences. This project allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of Polish history through songs and ballads that narrated important events and figures.
Lessons from the Institute
Older classes had the opportunity to participate in an online lesson about the Polish Underground State. It was an inspiring history lesson, full of personal stories and valuable lessons. Students could understand the significance of the Polish struggle for independence and Poland’s contribution to world history.
Polish Oxford Debates
Participation in the Polish Oxford Debates was a unique opportunity for our older students to express their thoughts and develop argumentation skills. This debate allowed students to practically use the Polish language in speaking and develop critical thinking.
December
Meeting with the Polish author
The meeting with Grzegorz Kasdepke was an inspiring lesson about the value of language and a passion for reading. Students had the opportunity to interact directly with the author, which was an unforgettable experience.
Meeting with a magician
In December, our school was visited by Illusionist Martin Laskowski, who presented his magical tricks, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The biggest surprise was creating a white carpet of snowflakes, which amazed everyone. Thanks to Martin, this day was not only full of fun but also reminded us of the importance of dreams and childlike joy.
School nativity play and Christmas Eve
December ended with school nativity plays and Christmas Eve, which were filled with the magic of the Christmas atmosphere, love, and community. This event allowed us all to feel the closeness and warmth of our school family.
Publications and media appearances
Our school was also active in the media, with articles and appearances in “Polish Week”, “Kumpel dla Polonii”, “Razem Młodzi Przyjaciele”, and “Sami Swoi” radio. This allowed for an even broader presentation of our work and school achievements.
Summary
The first quarter at the Polish School in Ravenscourt Park was full of inspiring events and activities. From the ceremonial start of the school year, through celebrating bilingualism, honouring the memory of ancestors, celebrating the fairy-tale world, supporting the elderly, to patriotic singing of the anthem – each of these events brought something special into the life of our school community. They are proof that our school is a place where traditions are cultivated, language skills are developed, and strong intercultural bonds are built. We look forward to the coming months, filled with equally inspiring and educational experiences for our students.
